It’s common knowledge that stress contributes to illness. But even though we know this, we continue to live our lives without doing anything about it.
Some people are trying to do something about it, but aren’t consistent enough to make a difference. I have found that meditating consistently - and by consistent I mean daily - works to keep me from getting triggered as often as I used to. Things just don’t set me off in the same way. I’m not saying I don’t get triggered, I do. But I snap out of it much faster. And if it’s something I need to deal with, I’m so much calmer than I ever used to be.
Breathwork is another technique I use to stay calm. I sometimes begin my meditation with a few minutes of breathwork. It not only calms me down, it puts me into a state of focus for my meditation. None of this happened overnight. It took months of daily meditation before I started noticing a difference.
Of course the Harmonic Egg plays a huge role in managing my stress these days. The sessions are deeply relaxing and I look forward to each session. At the end of the session my body and mind feel balanced. Many of our clients feel the same way and come back each month to keep their body in balance.
If you’re wondering about the science behind stress causing illness, here are three resources to look at - there are many more if you want to do your own research.
According to the NIH (National Institute of Health), almost every system in the body can be influenced by chronic stress. When chronic stress goes unreleased, it suppresses the body’s immune system and ultimately manifests as illness.
According to the American Psychological Association, the long-term activation of the autonomic nervous system and the overexposure to cortisol and other stress hormones that come with it can disrupt almost all of your body's processes. This can put you at increased risk for a variety of physical and mental health problems, including anxiety, depression, digestive issues, headaches, muscle tension and pain, heart disease, heart attack, high blood pressure, stroke, sleep problems, weight gain, and memory and concentration impairment.
A research team at Carnegie Mellon University has found that the effects of psychological stress on the body's ability to regulate inflammation can promote the development and progression of disease.
Inflammation is partly regulated by the hormone cortisol and when cortisol is not allowed to serve this function, inflammation can get out of control. Specifically, immune cells become insensitive to cortisol's regulatory effect. In turn, runaway inflammation is thought to promote the development and progression of many diseases.
